DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT

Guidelines

THE TEAM

The game shall be played between two teams of five (5) players.  Substitutes may only enter the match between games or in the case of injury.  Teams may carry two substitutes for a total of seven (7) players.

THE FIELDS

The games will be played indoors at Murphy Junior High School.  There will be two (2) courts used throughout the tournament.  However, there is an additional court that will be used if numbers deem it necessary.

THE EQUIPMENT

The ball used in the tournament will be a rubber-coated foam ball.  Participants must wear shoes, shirts and pants/shorts.  Teams are encouraged to dress to represent and unify their team.

THE GAME

The object of the game is to eliminate all opposing players by getting them “OUT”.  Only one (1) player may be eliminated per throw and this may be done by:

1. Hitting an opposing player with a thrown ball.

2. Catching a ball thrown by your opponent before it is considered dead (includes deflected balls).

3. Causing an opponent to drop a live ball as a result of contact by another thrown live ball (usually occurs when a ball is being used as a shield to block a thrown ball.)

4. An opposing player stepping out of bounds to avoid getting hit.

5. If a person deflects a thrown ball with another ball, they cannot get out (even if they are hit by the deflected ball).  If someone catches the deflected ball, the person throwing the ball is out.

6. If a team has more players and all the balls they will have five (5) seconds to throw a ball, or a player will be “out”.

7. Any ball hitting the wall or floor is dead. If a ball hits you, then the wall or floor, you are out. If the ball hits the wall or floor, then you, it is a dead ball.  A ball laying on the floor shall be considered part of the floor.

8.  Anything being worn by a player counts as a part of their body.  If the ball strikes clothing it will be treated as if it hit the player directly.

9.  If the ball hits a player, he is officially still in the game until the ball that hit him/her is dead.  A ball is only dead once it makes contact with anything other than players (wall, floor, ceiling, or another ball).  If the ball hits a player and one of his/her teammates catches it while it is still live, it will count as a catch and the player who threw it will be “out”.

RUSH RULE

Game begins with an opening rush.  Once the referee starts the game, the players may retrieve one (1) of the six (6) available balls placed on the center line.  All balls are available for either team.  Once a player retrieves the ball from the center court, it must be brought back to the throw line before it will be considered active.  Once behind the throw line, it may be legally thrown at an opponent.  Sliding is not permitted; you must approach the center line under control.  Players may not leave their feet or cross the line on the opening rush.  Any violation of the opening rush rules will result in the player being declared “out”.

BOUNDARY RULES

The playing field shall be the boundary of one (1) volleyball court outlined in gray.  The court is divided into two (2) equal sections by a center line and contains one (1) throw line on each side.

1. During play, all players must remain within the boundary lines.

2. Players must only leave the gray boundary lines to retrieve balls and must return to the court within    five (5) seconds.

3. A player may be handed a ball, provided the player receiving the ball remains completely within their team’s field boundaries. This does not apply to the opening rush.  Spectators CANNOT pass balls.

4. A player shall not:

a. Have any part of their body contact the playing surface.  They must remain on their feet.

b. Leave the playing field to avoid being hit, or attempt to catch a ball.

c. Have any part of their body cross the center line.  This rule includes the opening rush to start the game.

Any violation of these boundary rules will result in the player being declared “out”.

RULE ENFORCEMENT

All contests will be supervised by at least one (1) field monitor.  The field monitors’ responsibilities will be to rule whether or not hits they observe are legal and to identify team members that are “out”.  Players will be expected to rule whether or not they were eliminated by a legal hit in the event that a field monitor did not see the play.  THE FIELD MONITOR’S DECISION IS FINAL – NO EXCEPTIONS, NO ARGUMENTS

MATCH PLAY

Matches will be decided using a “best-of-three” format in which the first team to win two (2) games will be declared the winner.

WINNING THE GAME

The first team to legally eliminate all opposing players will be declared the winner. A three (3) minute time limit has been established for each game. If neither team has been eliminated at the end of the three (3) minutes, the team with the greater number of players remaining will be declared the winner. All balls are dead (even if they are in the air) when the three (3) minute horn sounds. In the case of an equal number of players remaining after regulation, all five (5) team members will return to the court for a sudden-death overtime period.  The first team to eliminate an opposing player will be declared the winner of that match.
